Greta Erikson: The Complete Caprice Collection

Greta Erikson, Josef Grünfarb, Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Stig Westerberg, Sten Frykberg

Among the “forgotten legends” in Swedish musical life, there are probably few as prominent and respected as the pianist, professor and pedagogue Greta Erikson (1919–2014). With this large collection containing all our recordings with this exceptional musician, Caprice Music wants to give an extensive insight into her combination of deeply emotional interpretation, elaborate technique, as well as a powerful and yet relaxed piano playing.

This album is available for streaming and download on most digital stores such as Spotify, Apple Music, and Tidal.

With almost 90 years at the keys, Greta Erikson built up an experience that is hard compare with anyone else’s in Sweden. Already as a 10-year-old prodigy, she made her debut in Stockholm’s then newly built concert hall, and her subsequent career would follow the enormous development that the country’s music scene made throughout the 20th century. Greta’s predilection for high and late romantic repertoire gave her a large and devoted audience, but she was also involved in many premieres of newly written art music – despite some sharply worded opinions about it!

However, it is perhaps her commitment to the legacy of the great Swedish romantic composers that gave her the clearest pianistic profile. For Caprice alone, she made several, then unique recordings of masterpieces by Franz Berwald and Adolf Wiklund. She toured Europe, the Soviet Union and the United States, playing chamber music works with international greats such as Mstislav Rostropovich and David Oistrakh. Greta also made herself known early on through her many appearances on TV and radio before, during the 1950s and 60s, she methodically shifted her primary focus to her teaching work as pedagogue and later professor at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm. In that role, she nurtured entire generations of great pianists, such as Carl-Axel Dominique, Dag Achatz, Matti Hirvonen and Jacob Moscovicz.
